Athlete of the month - Pixie Davison
Tell us about you? - age/nicknames/background
My name is Jen, but I’m known as Pixie at the box. I grace the box with my presence at the 5am and 5:30pm classes on alternate weeks. I’m 35, married to Blair with 2 kids – the youngest (Charlie) born in March this year. I have gone through two pregnancies while at CFMB. I’m working full time as a Town Planner. I grew up as an Army brat, having lived all over Australia and in Texas in the States.
What did you do fitness wise before crossfit?
I played netball all my life (hence why my knees crackle when I squat), and I used to laugh at the prospect of going for a run. I liked the gym but only the weights section. You’d be lucky to catch me on a treadmill.
Why crossfit?
Because that 1 hour of effort changes everything about my day. Sometimes I’m there for the exercise, sometimes for the friends. It turns around a shitty mood, relieves stress, makes you work towards something better. Plus honestly how cool is it to learn a new skill like a bar muscle up? How good is it to see muscles in new places? To throw weights around that previously too heavy to lift.
What results have you seen while at CFMB
I thought that having kids basically meant you were stuck with a mum bod for the rest of your life. I’ve had two now and my abs have just made a reappearance after a long hibernation. I’ve come to realise that the human body is ridiculously good at adapting and snapping back into shape after adversity.
Favorite exercise?
Gotta love the bar muscleups, hand stand walks and hspu.
Least favorite?
My inner monologue during Thrusters is a string of expletives.
Favorite food/?
Thai food – you say the word curry and I’m in.
Who or what inspires you?
I get motivated by people who achieve something for the first time, or when you see someonecommit to achieving something, work at it and get it. I worked on handstand walks because I saw Laurie practice for 5 minutes every day before class, and before you knew it she walk walking the length of the box. I watch some of the 5am crew work tirelessly to get better at a lift and I swear I celebrate just as hard as they do when they hit it. I watched Naomi get one of her first ring muscle up after many failed attempts and I just about lost my mind. That’s all the inspiration I need.
Advice to new comers?
Don’t stay comfortable. Always add a little more weight and try again until you fail because if you don’t fail you know what your limit is. Also – practice a new skill for 5 mins a day before class. You might not think that you’re doing anything but one day you’ll go to practice and you’ll nail it.
